Abingdon Wine Estate
Located in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, a unique pioneering estate which has positioned itself as a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer in KZN. Abingdon was the first farm to produce a certified estate wine from KZN grapes with their maiden vintage in 2007. The farm was bought in 2000 by owners, Ian & Jane Smorthwaite, and the first vines were planted in 2004. Situated at 1140m above sea level, the Estate has 3ha under vine and produces certified single vineyard Estate wines from 100% KZN grapes.
Abingdon is a family run estate with father & daughter team, Ian and Laurie Smorthwaite, taking a hands on approach to all aspects of viticulture and wine making.
Tasting Room & Wine Sales
Abingdon Wine Estate opened their very popular tasting room overlooking the vineyard in August 2009.
We are open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays for tastings and lunch. Lunch bookings are essential - call Jane on 083 463 8503. Please see our tasting room page for updated information. .
Wine tastings are run between 10.30am-4 pm. Join the family team, Ian, Jane, Hadley and Laurie at the bar for a personalised introduction to our wines. Tastings are charged per glass (R15 - R25). Booking is not necessary, but please note the bar can get very busy, particularly if you are wanting a harvest board to accompany your tasting, so it is always good to call ahead.
Harvest boards and tapas style dishes are served overlooking the vineyard on beautiful sunny days, or inside in front of our three roaring fireplaces on cold Midlands days.
Regret no children under 10 unless they are able to sit quietly as we do not have a children's play area.
Wine sales on weekdays by prior arrangement - we will try our best to accommodate any weekday requests, however, as we are a small family run vineyard, we regret that we can only open for wine sales and not tastings from Monday to Thursday.
